Topics for a christian sermon?

Right now I am in community college but I will be transferring and going to become a pastor. With that said my dad is currently a chaplain in the Navy, and he has to go out of town over one weekend. I asked if I could give the message while he is gone. He said yes. My question for you all is what are some of your favorite verses or topics in the Bible? I need a little help on deciding what to write about. Thank you very much and God bless.
The church I go to doesn’t have traditions. It is for students in the navy. So it has anywhere between 6-20 students show up. But once they are done with school they move on to their stations. So we get a new batch of students every week and we lose students every week.

You can start with this joke… a doctor, lawyer, and pastor went hunting. A deer ran through the woods 40 yards away. They aimed their guns and shot. The deer ran a little ways farther then fell over. The men asked each other is the deer dead ? " I’ll find out" said, the doctor. The doctor walked up to the deer , checked him out and walked back." Yes the deer is dead ," the doctor announced. Then they asked each other " Who shot the deer ?" " I’ll find out ", said the lawyer. So the lawyer walked to the deer. After a few minutes the lawyer walked back and replied ," The pastor shot the deer ". " How could you tell with all of us firing ?" the other two asked. The lawyer replied " the bullet went in one ear, and out the other ". You can use the joke to to illustrate how the OT prophets never seemed to have their message stick with the children of Israel—but just go in one ear, out the other.

Does your church have set Biblical readings or lessons each week? If it does, you might want to find out what they are and base your sermon on one of those.

Pretty Please, do not preach why to believe in God, that topic is very old. Try taking the highlights from your walk inside the Christian faith, something you maybe struggling with, or something you did recently that reflects one of the apostles’ actions….keeps me interested in Church. Make it about 15 minutes long, if it is a really long sermon, many people become bored, and won’t listen to what you are saying, if you have one longer than 15 minutes, highlight main points, and compress it.

    God Bless

Why not a message on getting the people to read their Bibles?
what about service and helping out?
why not get the congregation involved, like it tells us in 1 Cor 14?

I’ve always been fond of 1 Samuel 15. Especially when Samuel tells Saul what Yahweh wants Saul to do:

3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

It’s a wonderful story that all Christians should remember and know by heart.

Do a sermon on judgement. I think that alot of "christians" are more like "church-ians" and they forget alot of the very important aspects that are taught about christ in the bible. For instance, the main people that Jesus hung out with in the bible were not "goodie goodies" but were foul mouthed fishermen, thieving tax collectors and prostitutes. Alot of "christians" these days still have the "holier than thou" mentality that really puts a bad face on christianity and turns prople away from the true Jesus lord. I think it’s important for church goers to remember the roots of christianity, and that it is not the "healthy" that are in need of a physician, but those who are "sick".

The best thing to teach Christians is that they can lose salvation. I been teaching this for over 10 years. I have over 50 passages of Scriptures I use, but here’s just a few from one book in the Bible:

2 Timothy 2:15 – Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. ~ Note: For Be diligent to present the KJV has Study to show. Study (Be diligent) has the meaning of to hasten, to exert one’s self, endeavor, give diligence. It is something that we personally have to do. God does not force us to automatically do it nor does He do it for us. Approved also means accepted, pleasing. Rightly dividing also means to handle aright, to teach the truth directly and correctly. The word is the word of God, the moral precepts given by God. Truth also means the truth as taught in the Christian religion, respecting God and the execution of His purposes through Christ, and respecting the duties of man, opposing alike to the superstitions of the Gentiles and the inventions of the Jews, and the corrupt opinions and the precepts of the false teachers even among Christians. So definitely this Scriptures does not mean we are "Once Saved, Always Saved." We have personal duties that will make us be accepted and pleasing to God. If anyone teaches otherwise, then they are a false teacher with no truth of the matter and we should oppose them.

2 Timothy 2:17,18 – And their message will spread like cancer.
Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed
concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already
past; and they overthrow the faith of some. ~ Note: That is why
this is a big deal to teach correct doctrine because the false
doctrine spreads and makes others to not know the truth and have
their faith be overthrown. The word for overthrow also means
overturn, destroy, subvert. Clearly this Scripture is saying that
what people say and teach can destroy the faith of others. This
is not any other thing that can separate us from the love of God.
It is still the personal fault of the one who allows their faith
to be overthrown. Then when that happens, Scripture implies here
that they are in sin, so it’s still that person’s personal sin
that causes the loss of salvation. I write this because of what
the very next verse says. 2:19 – Nevertheless the solid foundation
of God stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those who are
His," and "Let everyone who names the name of Christ (the Lord)
depart from iniquity. ~ You see, sin is the issue. A Christian
who perseveres stays set free from sin (stays departed from
iniquity). This Scripture here is the basis of Christianity. But
the "O.S.A.S." doctrine says that you are always saved no matter
what. But no place in Scripture does it imply that.

2 Timothy 3:14,15 – But you must continue in the things which you
have learned and been assured of… the Holy Scriptures, which are
able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in
Christ Jesus. ~ Note: The word for continue also means abide,
remain, endure, not to depart. So this is saying not to depart
from what we were taught with God’s word that makes us know how
to be saved. Salvation is not as easy as knowing your ABC’s, like
    I’ve seen some people preach. A = admit you’re a sinner, B =
believe in Jesus, C = confess… Well it is not that easy. In
Matthew 7:14, Jesus said, "…difficult is the way." The word
for difficult also means narrow, press hard upon, a compessed
way, contracted. That is not easy.

2 Timothy 4:3,4 – For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. ~ Note: This is what has happened to some of the people who believe in "Once Saved, Always Saved." The word for endure also means suffer, bear with, forbear, to hold up, to sustain. The word for sound in sound doctrine also means of Christians whose opinions are free from any mixture of error. So bear with the correct doctrine of Scripture and not man-made doctrine that’s full of errors. The word for itching in itching ears means desirous of hearing something pleasant. Hearing that you are "Once Saved, Always Saved" is pleasant, but it is not the truth.

In your daily devotion, ask God what do you want the people to hear, what do they need? This should always be your desire. Seek God thru prayer, reading the word and He will speak to you.
Start using this as your foundation now.

There will be times when you may not have anything specific until the last minute, but trust God he will give you what the people need. In your daily devotions God will give you so many messages that you will be able to save them and use them in the future.

Ask God to show you. I mean, no one is going to be moved in a service if God isn’t the author of the sermon. Don’t let it be your words, but God’s words through you.

But if you really want some verses:

    Titus 1:18

And the story, I can’t remember if its in Matthew or Mark right now(I was in a bad wreck a few weeks ago and am having a hard time with my memory), but the story about Jesus calming the storm. You know, they’re on the boat and there is a storm. Jesus is under the boat sleeping and when they go done to wake him, He says, "Why do you have so little faith," and then calms the storm.

That applies to use because so many times we get caught up in a storm and we don’t understand that why Christ isn’t calming it when we want to or we even think that because we have Christ, we aren’t supposed to have storms. The truth is that He is always with us and our storms are tests of faith. Sometimes we think that Jesus is sleeping through our problems and not helping us, but the reality is that even if he is sleeping, he still a million times more powerful and capable of calming the seas than we could even imagine.

Another one is that Ephesians 3 says that Christ wants to make his home in our hearts. A home is something permanent, unlike, say, a hotel room. At a hotel room, we are expected to either stay one night and leave the next day or keep paying and stay as long as we like. A lot of the time we treat our hearts like hotels and we only let Christ stay for a night. Or he can only stay as long as he likes if he keeps blessing us.

Hmmm. That’s all I’ve got. I wish you all the luck and may God bless you.

I recommend praying the rosary daily. The Virgin Mary is Our Lady of Good Counsel, and can help you to decide on a topic. See the following promises.

    The rosary is explained here:
    http://www.ewtn.com/Devotionals/Prayers/rosary/how_to.htm

The fifteen promises of Mary to Christians who recite the rosary:
    1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary shall receive signal graces.
    2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.
    3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against Hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.
    4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
    5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.
    6. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God and become worthy of eternal life.
    7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the Church.
    8. Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plenitude of His graces; at the moment of death, they shall participate in the merits of the saints in Paradise.
    9. I shall deliver from Purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.
    10. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven.
    11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary.
    12. All those who propagate the Holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.
    13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire Celestial Court during their life and at the hour of death.
    14. All who recite the Rosary are my sons, and brothers of my only Son, Jesus Christ.
    15. Devotion to my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.

    God bless!
